The First Technical Requirements for 6G Are Taking Shape
Although 5G networks are still expanding around the world, telecommunications experts are already defining the technical foundation for the next generation of wireless connectivity.
International working groups have now completed an important stage in the development of 6G by establishing draft performance requirements for future radio technologies. These requirements will be used to evaluate the systems that may eventually become part of global 6G standards.
The new framework includes 20 technical performance areas. Some build on capabilities already associated with 5G, while others respond to emerging uses such as immersive communication, highly accurate positioning, intelligent transportation and advanced industrial automation.
One of the main goals of 6G is to create networks that can support communication between people, devices, sensors, vehicles and digital environments with greater reliability. Future networks are also expected to integrate artificial intelligence more deeply into their operation.
However, 6G should not be understood only as a faster version of 5G. Researchers are studying how it could provide more consistent service, lower response times and better coverage across terrestrial, aerial and satellite networks.
Energy efficiency and sustainability are also becoming part of the technical discussion. As data consumption increases, future networks will need to handle significantly more information without allowing energy use to grow at the same rate.
The completion of evaluation guidelines in June 2026 represents another step toward a global standard. These guidelines will help experts compare proposed technologies using the same technical criteria.
Commercial 6G services are still several years away. Before deployment can begin, candidate technologies must be submitted, tested, evaluated and incorporated into international standards.
The work taking place today will determine how future devices communicate and how digital services develop during the next decade.
